Introducing

Wuhan City

Introduction

Located in central China, Wuhan is a megacity in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the capital city of Hubei Province, serving as an important industrial, scientific and educational base, as well as a comprehensive transportation hub in China. It covers an area of 8,494 square kilometres, with a population of 12 million.

Wuhan is known in China as the “River City”. Since the Yangtze River, the longest river in China, meets its largest tributary, the Han River, in Wuhan, the whole city is divided into three parts, forming a magnificent pattern of Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang. Wuhan is also known as the “City of Hundreds of Lakes” for having the East Lake, the largest intra-city lake in China, and many other lakes. A quarter of the urban area is covered by waters.

With a history of 3,500 years, Wuhan is a famous historical and cultural city in China and one of the birthplaces of China’s Chu culture. Wuchang was the first to rise in revolt in the 1911 Revolution. It is also a famous city of science and education in China, with the third-largest number of colleges and universities in the country. Wuhan holds an important position in China with regard to the high-tech industry, auto industry and business circulation industry. Wuhan is also the centre of China’s high-speed railways.

It takes about five hours to get to Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong by high-speed rail from Wuhan. As an aviation hub in central China, Wuhan boasts 40 direct flights to overseas destinations and is the only city in this region with direct flights to four continents. Wuhan is a major tourist city in central China, a key node city in the Belt and Road Initiative, and the portal to the Three Gorges tourist line along the Yangtze River. It boasts three national AAAAA scenic areas, including the Yellow Crane Tower, Wuhan East Lake Eco-tourism Scenic Area and Huangpi Mulan Culture Ecological Tourism Area. Wuhan is well-renowned for beautiful plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, lotus flowers and rhododendrons.

In terms of quality urban tourism scenic spots, WTA Wuhan Open, Wuhan Garden Expo, Han Show, Wanda Movie Park, Happy Valley and Polar Ocean World are must-sees for urban tourists.
